Salesforce just made AI free for small businesses — here's what that means for you

Until recently, if you were running a small business on Salesforce and wanted to use Agentforce — the company's AI assistant that can summarize records, draft emails, and handle routine tasks — you needed to negotiate licenses, understand consumption credits, and have conversations with account executives about pricing. Most small business owners stopped reading before they got that far.

That just changed.

In March 2026, Salesforce announced that Agentforce is now built directly into its SMB-tier plans — Free, Starter, and Pro — with no extra setup, no additional SKUs, and no consumption pricing. The AI is simply included. The cost is absorbed into the seat price you're already paying.

What's actually included now

If you're on the Free, Starter, or Pro Suite, here's what you get out of the box starting now:

  • AI record summaries — Agentforce reads your CRM data and gives you a plain-language summary of any contact, account, or opportunity without you having to dig through fields.
  • "Draft with AI" email — Write a prompt, get a professional email draft. It works from inside Salesforce, using the context of the record you're viewing.
  • Pre-built Employee Agent — Available on Starter and Pro plans, this is a conversational AI you can talk to like a colleague. Ask it to update an opportunity, pull a report, or summarize your week. It won't need configuration to get started.

There's no meter running in the background. No credit pool to exhaust. No moment where your usage suddenly becomes a billable event. According to Eddie Cliff, Salesforce's General Manager for SMB and Growth Products, the cost is "simply absorbed into the seat price."

Why Salesforce made this move — and why it matters to you

This didn't happen in a vacuum. HubSpot, Zoho, and a new wave of AI-native CRM tools have been treating intelligence as a baseline feature — not an upgrade. Small businesses shopping for a CRM in 2026 increasingly expect AI to come standard. Salesforce was losing that comparison.

The result: Salesforce removed the on-ramp fee. And for small businesses, that's a real opportunity. 76% of SMBs that increased their tech spending over the past year plan to keep investing — the ones seeing results are the ones who got comfortable with AI early. Now you can do the same without any additional budget.

What else came with the Spring '26 Release

The Agentforce news wasn't the only thing Salesforce dropped for small businesses this year. The Spring '26 Release, which launched February 23, included a handful of updates that are genuinely useful for lean teams:

  • Sales Workspace — A personalized hub that surfaces what each rep should focus on that day, so less time is spent hunting through the system and more time is spent with customers.
  • Proactive Service — Identifies potential customer issues before they escalate, giving your team a heads-up before a client has to call in frustrated.
  • Two-Way Email — Turns standard email into a two-way conversation with AI-assisted replies handling common inquiries, so your team only steps in when it counts.
  • Native Geographic Information System (GIS) — Real-time field data for mobile workers, all inside Salesforce. No juggling separate mapping apps.
  • Agentforce Builder — Build your own AI agents without needing an IT team. This one is for businesses that want to go beyond the defaults and automate more of their workflows over time.

One thing to understand about the Employee Agent

The pre-built Employee Agent in Starter and Pro is intentionally simple. Salesforce designed it that way — you can't customize it, and that's the point. It's meant to get your team used to working alongside AI before you ever need to think about configuring anything. Think of it as the on-ramp, not the destination.

When your team is ready to go further — routing leads automatically, triggering service workflows, connecting AI to specific business processes — that's where the Agentforce Builder and a Salesforce partner can help. But you don't need to start there. Starting is the important part.

How to actually take advantage of this

The features are available. The cost barrier is gone. The question is whether your Salesforce setup is clean enough to make them useful.

AI record summaries are only as good as the data in your records. Draft with AI works best when your email templates and customer context are already organized. The Employee Agent needs your CRM to reflect how your business actually operates.

If your Salesforce has duplicate contacts, stale pipelines, or fields that nobody fills out — now is a good time to clean that up before the AI tries to summarize it. That's the kind of work we do at Intelligent Solutions every day: making sure your Salesforce is set up in a way that lets new features actually work for your business, not just exist in your account.
